Welcome to Qigong Healing Center Online Journal! This is a online journal (blog) maintained by Gary W. Abersold. Qigong Healing Center online journal is to communicate important topics which can be accessed through the wonders of the internet. My view points and commentary do not reflect my teachers and students and quite possibly the American Qigong Community in general. Being trained by Traditional Native teachers of Asia since 13 my teachings do follow that pretty close and will relfect it in my presentation. Qigong is a profound tradition which if just starting out will have you maybe hooked after one practice. I hope this website and our teachings help you in your personal quest. Gary W.

I can remember a time when certifications & lineage were held on a pedestal. Those who had them –- at least in my young eyes –- were the elite. There were only a handful of authentic Masters offering certifications, Lineage ceremony's, and those holding them were the few and the proud. You had to earn them and become intrusted with the skill your Sifu was teaching you; and you better be careful in entering a relationship with the Sifu and not turn it into a Primadonna situation of here I am make me into your disciple. Most authentic Masters would do this for anyone after a long training relationship of several years as a parting gift to you in what you have skillfully accomplished. To ask for it is very American & just rude.

I will also ad that most of the time the fee was very low money cost, not like what is going on these days with the Qigong marketers aka Qi of big $$$'s.

Now look at where we are. The seemingly hundreds of certification courses, DVDS, books etc. and now the colleges all trying to make a quick buck by marketing Asian Traditions & Culture... are know held by seemingly countless numbers of people. It's as if the Qigong Community, are trying to encourage the uneducated to spend literally thousands of dolllars for these badges of honor so people will notice them. "Look at me! Look at me! I'm "certified" and worthy of your employment!"

Well, any logically thinking seasoned East Asian traditions Practitioner (that's all of us, right?) will tell you that certifications aren't really all that. Sure, they prove that you know how to come to classes, workshops, study, & know how to memorize a few concepts, and has good test-taking skills. And I I'm not saying that Qigong certifications are a waste of time & aren't difficult to pass you for sure must develop your skill & prove yourself.

I am saying, however, that simply passing a certification course doesn't necessarily prove what the person really knows and can execute in real-world scenarios. It especially doesn't prove what type of practitioner/teacher the person is going to be. There are many knowledable teachers that look great on paper but couldn't run a group if there life depended on it; and sometimes they are so self involved its all about them and not sharing anything tangible.

School of Lineage

I've known many, many people with no great Certification training whatsoever who have gone out healed and taught many people from their experiences from their private teachers & boom they do a superior job, their reputation build very quickly-"they get it what is takes" to work in real life experiences. They're now considered an "expert" just like anyone else in the field. And this is regardless of their so called credible training experience and true know-how, from what I believe what I believe to be skeptical institutions .

The real kicker is that the Western Community is sidelining the tradition of lineage and true acomplishment for the fast certification. To me that's just wrong. It waters down the tradition and indirectly punishes those who really know their stuff. Qigong Certification Marketing practices by a few organizations is just plain wrong and does not work ; and if the country ever goes into regualtion of Qigong practices this will ruin this imported tradition. Who will regulate them?

The Big money side of Qigong Certifications

Let's look at the business side of Qigong certifications. Are certifications a marketing ploy by so-called Qigong organizations to beef up their revenue? Likely so. But who cares? People are coming up with ways to make money, so more power to them. What about the flip side? Are certifications a marketing ploy used by practitioners to get potential students and clients to recognize them? Well, why not? There's nothing wrong with that. We humans do things for our own selfish reasons anyway. If it works for us, why question it?

When you get down to the nuts and bolts, certifications do have something to offer. I can think of several benefits right off the top of my head:

You'll learn new material whether you believe you know all there is to know about a topic.

You'll show others that you have the ability to learn new content or at least brush up on old ideas.

You'll demonstrate that you're interested in bettering yourself and may just possess the personality traits required to succeed in teaching.

Even with these benefits I'm still down on what certifications stand for. They're a product of a marketer that's trying to define itself -- for good or for bad. The Western culture is trying to sideline lineage, years of training & devloping community for the fast buck. That being said, I do realize that certifications are an important tool for helping each and every one of us succeed in our pursuits. I have certifications and lineage documentation, but they were not down in a fast learn environment, thats the difference from the days of today. The same can be said for degrees, continuing education courses, and so on. It's just how things work. It's not a perfect world.

So, does certification really matter? Thats really for you to decide. If you choose to get certified, then make the most of it. Take the time to learn every aspect of the material rather than just focusing on whatever it takes to pass the test/class. Making a habit of giving everything you've got helps instill traits of leadership and success that far surpass the value of any certification you could ever obtain. By mastering the material, you'll learn more, earn more, and create an environment so you can truly enjoy what you do.

In the final anaysis is not how imortant or great your teacher is...but can they teach you to do what they can do and at what cost.

Qigong is a Process for Change

Understand In Qigong you have Today to Harness Real Change

Qigong is a process for personal change; actively pursuing a Qigong process daily and joining in a daily, weekly community setting of practitioners will excel your goal of achieving this tradition. The biggest stumble I see new practitioners doing is getting stuck in the chaos of their thoughts and researching what Qigong is through internet browsing and through books. Although these things are to educate people, it cannot teach the Qigong process. Better to join a Community of Practitioners or Sharing Skills Groups to kick start the process. Being committed to the tradition will guarentee success.

The Truth of Time

In reality the only time we ever have is the present moment. Time is a concept that we live with in order to make sense of things but in reality it doesn't really exist. The mis - understanding of this powerful truth keeps individuals stuck in negative health patterns, cycles, and even living very unstable daily. The only thing that we ever really have is the present moment - the active now.

The past is gone forever and the future never really comes. The only time we can ever experience the past or the future is in the present moment. It is the concept of the future that moves us to action in the present moment. When you make a plan for tomorrow what you are really doing is planning for a present moment in the future. I know this can seem kind of strange to talk like this but ponder these concepts as it relates to Health Maintenance and Personal change.

When a new practitioner in Qigong finally starts to understand the concept of the "active now", old patterns that cloud your judgement, deviations of health can begin to transform and essentially lose it's power; you can now really progress through the Qigong process. Once you begin to understand this you don't need to ponder on how or what to practice but rather to "just do it". You have the "active now" just practice, it is that simple. Taking massive action will be key to success being involved in a group dynamic will bring it real life tangible levels. Not sure what to do find a expert to evaluate you and join a real group of practitioners and then build from that.

We all have just today. The easiest way to remember is~"forever is today". I have taught this to new practitioners to grasp this concept and it changes their Qigong practice process & essentially the quality of their complete lives.

Get off the Internet and "Just Do It".

Coming Soon: Mastering the Art of Qigong

I will be publishing by the end of 2010 a textbook, more like a "field guide" entitled:

Mastering the Art of Qigong

by G.W. Abersold

This book will address what I believe that we as Teachers have not addressed, missed; the important point's of how to actually to do it; and how how to deal with the issues one might encounter along the way.

Not a beginners book by any means I believe most of this beginner information should be housed via online; more important to have if you would a "field guide" for would be practitioners. Technical wise really easy to do, students of mine get the live transmission which accelerates the process by 80%.Take a class and then read the deep Mind/Body Theory & Philosophy behind our system. We have several teachers who have trained in my system.

Gary Abersold

qigonghealingcenter@gmail.com

The Five Secrets

These 5 secrets are profound in their simplicity and incredibly effective in their truth. The first three deal with the physical body/mind and the last two address the spiritual. I hope these five notions can benefit you as much as they have me.

Good Food: Our bodies are our vehicle in the human realm. They encapsulate all that it means to be human and provide us the capacity and capability to live. Consequently, how we nourish and treat them is directly related to how we feel. By making healthy choices about what we consume, we are making more enlightened choices about how we choose to live. In addition to consuming healthy foods, regular exercise is also extremely important.

Respect: In Asian culture, respect permeates every aspect of the culture. American society, in contrast, is characterized by a sense of entitlement. We want everyone to respect and acknowledge us. My teachers in my life have taught respect underpins one of the most important keys to materializing abundance: Gratitude. Respect for parents and elders and an attitude of gratitude for all that you already have will increase your emotional vibration. By emotional vibration, I mean such lower emotions as jealousy and greed will be replaced by better feeling, peace, harmony, love, and appreciation. Since like attracts like, such emotions will attract more abundance into your life. So, give it a try – offer respect and gratitude and see what happens.

Knowledge: Just as the physical body needs nourishment and exercise, so does the mind. Regular reading and cultural activities will broaden your horizons and open the mind. Have you ever met an uptight person who is narrow minded? How did you feel around such a person? Did they strike you as being truly happy? Keeping an open and fresh outlook is another super important key to maintaining positive emotions. So, read something mind expanding…go to a play…try a different ethnic cuisine.

Spiritual Practice: Get on a regular schedule that allows you a daily period of meditation time…time to connect with the core of who you are. This could be a daily period of Qigong,Meditation,Tai Chi, etc. The most important element is that everyday you take some time out for yourself to relax and connect to and with yourself in the here and now…in this moment.

Offering: In addition to taking care of yourself, it is very important to maintain a connection with the divine. We are spiritual beings living a human existence and having a connection to the divine keeps us on our path and in touch with what’s really important and truly real. It also provides a source of life energy (chi) that is far more powerful than what is available to us when we draw from only ourselves. Find time everyday to offer to the divine, whatever that is for you. This could be a period of daily prayer and thanksgiving or actual food offerings as is common in the eastern traditions such as Taoism, and Buddhism. There are realms beyond the physical everyday reality that we see, hear, feel, and choose to acknowledge. And, we all have our own unique spirit guides. It’s not important which tradition most calls to you or whether you choose a personal religious path, but it is critical that you do have a connection to forces higher than yourself. This is so important because it allows you, on a daily basis, to step outside the pressures and stresses of worldly life and tap into higher potentials that will enable you to fully actualize your spirituality and your purpose for being here.

May our life be filled with endless abundance and boundless happiness and may faithfully follow this wisdom to benefit you as it has benefited me.

Gary

Teaching & Sharing Skills in Qigong Groups

It's very interesting in these traditions that almost nothing is written about what to do after you have knighted as a gate keeper of the path in Qigong.

What I am refering to is "how to be a good leader" of the tradition and this post probaly arrives in time since so many are using Dr. Oz and Oprah as a selling point to make Qigong more "En Vogue" to be important and popular. This hort piece is part of a series of writings for anyone who would like to use to assist in their classes and Skill sharing groups~Gary

Some Personal Tips for Newbie Teachers

                  By Gary W. Abersold

Your confidence lends confidence. Meditate before class and even pray for guidance.

Remember to breathe.

Talk about the benefits of Qigong Meditation. You can read from the handout until you feel comfortable. There are two versions of the handout: one is slightly more technical than the other. Use what works for you. Gather your own info over time.

Let them know that Qigong is a practice. It is not a thing to be accomplished.

Skill grows with practice and it is only through practice that the benefits of Qigong begin to manifest.

Speak slowly and gently while leading the practice. Allow time between suggestions - it's easier to go too fast than too slow. When in doubt, slow down.

The entire practice should take between 1 hour and 15 minutes. It doesn't hurt during the silent practice to remind people that if they are distracted they can gently bring their attention back to the dantian.

After the practice, when everyone's eyes are open again, encourage discussion.

Ask each person to talk about their experience after reminding everyone that there are no right or wrong experiences. If nothing happened it's okay to say so. This discussion helps build community in the group.

Ask for questions. It's okay if you don't know the answers. Today, you can ask me.

But it's okay not to know even if I'm not there. There will always be questions to which you do not know the answer, but once the question is asked, there is receptivity in you to recognizing the answer when it comes.

Recommend practice daily - if only for five minutes at a time.

Know that you have the power in your group; you can it run your own way be your own Master!

ENJOY YOURSELF!

Class is from 7pm-815pm and cost only $10.00 per class. To join email us at qigonghealingcenter@gmail.com to join this group.

What are some of the characteristics of Healing Sounds Qigong?

Healing Sounds Qigong utilize appropriate sound resonations to subtly vibrateour five internal organs ( the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, andkidneys), and the Triple Warmer areas. In so doing, our internal organscan be mildly stimulated and rejuvenated, and thus promoting our health.

Body movements are also used in this Qigong. These movements help open our breathing space. And if we are trained to become aware of the specific finger tips or toe tips, we can then easily open up therelated meridian lines. In this way, we can feel an even stronger shifting of the breathing space.

Healing Sounds Qigong is an excellent practice for training thecoordination between our body and our breathing. When we arepronouncing a healing sound, we are always exhaling. The ensuing body movement, no matter in what direction, will be done while inhaling. This natural coordination between breathing and body movements, makesthe otherwise difficult shifting of breathing space from our fingersthrough the whole body and legs, down to the toes.

Introduction: Received this review from a new skeptical new student; she has studied qigong and taiji before and emailed this to us. She was dissatisfied with her current class and wanted to try us out.

In general I don't solicit for testimonials from our students and clients; I prefer people to let the live classes stand on their own merit, the practices deliver each and every time. I although can see the value of testimonials for it can help a person to "nudge" themselves to try energy practices out. You can read more reviews here that I have received over the past few years:

                                  http://www.healingqigongcenter.com/healingtestimonials.htm

May 1, 2009 To Whom It May Concern:

Joy to you all!!!! I?ve just gotten out of a Qi gong healing Centersession with Gary Abersold and his teachers, students; this is a tadbit difficult because I am so full of energy, and being centered, andthe words are hard to come by. I have many ailments and yet I feelgreat! Better than I have in many, many, years. I have taken classesaround in Michigan, Florida, Colorado, Arizona and have never had theresults that his Master & group of students and teachers have. Iwill admit at first I was not sure how good it would be because theresno sales pitch, products to buy or high dollar attached to theirteachings. People in this Michigan area should seek him out! I feelgrateful to be part of this learning group. I will also say that thisexperience with Qi gong Healing Center was very, very pleasant. I feltthe power of their healing energy. The energy presented itself as heatflowing from their hands and fingers. I felt immediate relief from painin some parts of my body and partial relief in others. Everybody needsthis and what an awesome world this would be if be could all open up,show up, listen, release and soar! I am 59 years old and this was oneof the most profound experiences of my life. Thank you again! My lifehas been forever changed and I am not playing. Of course, none of thiswould have been possible without belief, of which I have an abundance,so take this to heart people. God Bless you all!!!

L. Butterfield

Swine Flu/Influenza

Received alot of emails today from all over on what to do to prevent swine flu invasion: keep practicing your qigong, which will keep your immune system in tip top shape. From a easy understanding when you practice you create alot of Cellular vibration and stimulate your energy body. If you get sick you will need a practitioner who understands what to do, to balance the pattern going on in your body, there are many factors involved when body is manifested by what we call the sickly qi. Keeping your practice strong and practicing outside are great things to do. Do some walking, which will help! There are some easy Chinese Herb formulas you can also help with this; if interested email and will explain what to do.

Follow protocols issued by CDC for eliminating possible self infection. In China they stopped eating Pork which I would personally highly recommend. Use common sense when dealing with Influenza; don't get scared by the hysteria. Some networks have sensationalized the Flu which really scares alot of people; do what is right for you.

In a nutshell Western Medicine and Chinese Medicine Traditions work the best when combined. Please keep practicicng take it from a veteran who was plaqued with many respiratory imbalances in my youth that Qigong will deliver and keep you strong.

CDC Website: http://www.cdc.gov

Gary Abersold

Lessons from the Zhen Ding Health Care Center

Here begins series of valuable lessons from Dr. Kuo's 50 + years experience; hope you enjoy

Dr. Kuo emitting Qi to a patient at his Center in China

Dr Zhi Zhen Kuo Health Walking Method

This walking method is similar to Guolin Qigong-but is not Guolin walking which is very specific. This is Dr. Kuo's own personal revealations from working with patients. This is a english translation on the summary of the "health walking".

According to many research reports, it pointed out that moderate exercise can increase immunity; during the flu season people with strong immunity system would be able to resist the flu virus. Which we need to now based on current swine flu data.

Dr. Kuo's Fast Waking for Health method is based on the space theory of his Healing System which is too lengthy for here. During the fast walking, people walk with uplifting shoulder and arms, it could open the energy pathway quickly, promote the blood and Qi / energy circulation, activate whole body's cellular vibration, hence promote health.

Dr. Kuo suggested that Fast Walking for Health at least 30 minutes per day, this will increase immunity, promote blood circulation, enlighten a personsr heart / their joy and reach the happy and healthy condition.

Purpose: To open energy pathways and promote

energy flow in the body.

    Methods:

Walking naturally with both hands swaying, bend your figures a bit, gently close mouth, put the tip of tongue close to the root of the mouth.

Right hand sway backward to the lower back, lift up right shoulder and stretch the arm with palm facing snow mountain area (gate of life area). At the same time, left hand sway forward to lower abdomen area below the navel, uplift the left shoulder, and stretch arm with palm facing lower Dan Tian area.

When the palm facing lower abdomen or lower back, imagine and direct the energy from palm radiate to Hui yin, increase energy pressure in the Hui Yin area. Because Hui Yin area is the driving force for the body.

    Benefits:

Promote driving force: The walking exercise can promote driving force, increase vitality, promote and strengthen immunity. When the driving force is strong, the body self-healing capability would be developed.

Promote normal bowl movement: When the abdomen muscle is loose, or gain weight in the abdomen area, it is the symptom of aging, it means the stomach and intestine lose the vitality and become weak and loose. The intestine cannot move properly, so that residual stool would stay in the intestine, the toxin from the residual stool will flow into other part of body, cause chemical changes and aging. When both hands energy radiate to the lower abdomen area, it will activate and promote intestine cellular vibration. So that the bowl movement would be smooth and the residual stool would be removed.

Promote normal lung function: Lung is in charge of water distribution of body. The breath will affect the blood circulation and energy movement. Fast walking can increase intake of oxygen to nourish the lung and whole body.

Promote happiness: fast walking can increase the secretion of phenol and reduce stress and felling joys and happiness.

Who is Dr Zhi Zhen Kuo?

Dr. Zhi Zhen Kuo, an inspiring innovator and extraordinary Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor, was born in China in 1943. He began practicing medicine at age of 16. His first clinical case was a patient suffering from phlebitis, a kind of terminal illnesses.

Below are some simple guidelines for those who resonate with teachings of the Tao within their energy practices:

Taoist Ambiance

For those people who would like to create their own Taoist space, or to improve the energy of their existing space, here is some advice:

In China the method of creating authentic Taoist space is to engage the services of a qualified Taoist clergyperson. Different types of Taoist ritual specialists can clear a space's energy, rid a space of unwanted influences, "open" a statue or ritual item in order to infuse that item with energy of a particular Taoist Deity, etc. There is no true substitute for this method, unfortunately most people do not have access to Taoist ritual specialists. The good news is that you can still create excellent Taoist space to enhance your sense of beauty, functionality and spiritual sence. Here's how:

* SELECT A SPACE: The first thing you need to do is to select a space. It may be in your house, place of work, garden, or anywhere else, depending on your particular objectives. The important thing is when you pick a space vigilantly maintain its special, Taoist character.

If your abjective are an altar then generally speaking, you should pick a space towards the east or south (so that you face east or south when you face your altar, statue, etc.). Your sacred space should not share a wall with a bathroom, a garage, or any other obvious negative influence. Sun and fresh air add to the potency of your space.

* CLEAN YOUR SPACE: Once you have selected a space, you should physically and energetically clean it. There are many ways to do this, according to many different traditions. This work has often been performed by professionals, but you can achieve great results as well. Before you actually create your space make sure you first physically clean it, this should include and repairs needed or even a fresh coat of painting etc.

Note: Taoists, when ever possible, do not use chemicals of any kind in, on or around their bodies, so when cleaning use plain water or to add a cup of pure apple cider vinegar to a bucket of cleaning water. Use this water to wash the floor, the walls, your table, or anything in your Taoist space. When done use fresh air to help dry your space.
Then once you are satisfied, you can progress to energetic cleansing.

Some people like to use "smudge sticks," large wands of aromatic herbs (like sage) to perform energetic cleansings. After having cleaned your space (and yourself!), light the smudge stick and walk around your space. You should be praying fervently as you bring the cleansing smoke into every part of your space. When you are satisfied, allow fresh air to carry away the smoke and any remaining negative influence.

ARRANGE YOUR SPACE: Now that you have a defined area, and that the defined area has been energetically purified, you are ready to import your Taoist goods.

For those of you that are creating a shrine or altar with the use of a Diety be aware of the spatial relationships involving your Deities. Do not place lesser Immortals above higher ranking Immortals. It is also best to have your Deities overlooking pleasant scenery. Follow your instincts and I'm sure you will create a very respectfull enviornment for your Dieties.

* COMMUNICATION: Congratulations! You now have a functional Taoist space. You can use it to meditate, pray etc.

If you are interested in communicating with the Taoist Gods then below is a basic introduction. Before praying, make sure that your are comfortable with your space and its overall cleanliness.

Light your candles. Light one or three sticks of incense and bow three times with the incense in your hand. Do not blow on incense to be offered at an altar. Wave it instead. After bowing place the incense sticks in an incense burner. Assume a kneeling or meditative position, making sure to maintain proper posture (a straight spine from the base of your skull to your tailbone). You are now ready to offer your thoughts and energy. We can't tell you what to say, or what prayers to use. Taoists sometimes spend lifetimes learning these things. For now it is important that your prayers come directly from your own heart, and that they are offered with sincerity and love. When you are satisfied, give thanks and bow three times. Then you may stand and put out your candles.

* CARE OF YOUR TAOIST SPACE: Your relationship with your Taoist space should not always be focused on the benefits you can receive. It is equally important to give, to "feed" your space. Candles, flowers and incense, offered with sincerity, respect, and love, are excellent methods. They enable you to make a generalized offering, and thus help to create your desired energy. They make an excellent specific offering to a Taoist Deity, for those who are inclined to do so. Finally, candles and incense also help to preserve the energetic cleanliness of your space. Just be sure to use high quality beeswax candles and pure incense. Less expensive options are often full of poisons.

For altars you may also make an offering of pure water or even fresh fruit. Simply place the offering at the focal point of your Taoist space with sincere prayers. When you are satisfied (or when the fruit first starts to over-ripen) remove them with thanks. Any remaining water can be fed to a plant (preferably one inside your Taoist space), while any remaining fruit should be disposed of in a normal fashion.
Finally, you should repeat the general energetic cleansing process at repeated intervals. You will know your space needs a cleansing!

The Importance of Xiu-Lian

(loosely translated as Cultivation & Practice)

In our modern society, there are an increasing number of crises and problems: Viruses, Flu's, Environmental Pollution, Ecological Destruction, Global Warming?.It is believed by many of my Mentors that I have studied with and continue study with that we need to change ourselves at both the physical and spiritual levels, so that we can better adapt to our environment and increase our chances of survival. Only then can we save the Earth, save humanity and save ourselves. I do realize that living in the west can this grand vision be accomplished?

In light of this, there are effective qigong methods to facilitate the practice of Xiu-Lian, or in other words, transforming our physical bodies and our Spiritual lives and pursuits.

What is Xiu Lian( pronounced Show Leean) anyway?

Definition of Xiu: To transform the soul and make it healthy, beautiful, and strong through the combined effects of receiving high energy transmissions and dedicating oneself to living a life of kind thought, kind speech, and kind acts. Dedication to Xiu facilitates an individual's progress towards higher virtue, enhanced spiritual health and growth, wisdom and purity of the soul.

Definition of Lian: To transform the physical body and make it healthy and strong through the combined effects of receiving high energy transmissions and dedicating oneself to Cultivation practice. Dedicated practice facilitates an individual's progress towards improving and optimizing physical health and purification (detoxification) of the physical body.

A Guide for Beginning Students

As the number of qigong schools and teachers climbs in the U.S., it is becoming increasingly more difficult for an aspiring qigong practitioner to choose between the various systems. Because each system moves qi through the body in a different way, it is wise to choose only one system and to stick with what works. This blog commentary is intended to provide guidance for a beginning student in support of this important decision. It is a process which is both an art and a science.

So many things are changing with this tradition that it could be at risk of loosing its essence with the ever marketing angles and groups trying to implant into would be practitioners it's propaganda on regulation of Qigong practices and what sets to do. Many core concepts are being forgotten about, that many of a great teachers use to teach.

Relax, use your common sense and intuition

Does the practice fit in with your personal goals? Do you feel a connection with the instructor or Master? Does the learning environment provide both support and guidance that you need? If you are clear about what your needs are, then everything that you need to know can be described by the Chinese proverb: When the student is ready, the Teacher appears.

Have a basic idea about where a particular practice falls

within the spectrum of qigong systems

Qigong is a very powerful and versatile practice. Some systems allow students to experience qi and its healing benefits almost immediately; others may take many years or decades. In ancient China there were Masters who asked students to carry water and make fires for thirty years without teaching a single physical posture. Other ancient Masters were reputed to be able to teach students by sending energy transmissions using telepathy over long distances. In modern day America, qigong instruction still takes a variety of different forms; with different levels of expertise of teaching.

Ask yourself questions after your first

series of classes

What does your heart say? Are you comfortable with the practice? Moving and balancing qi and can stir up physical, mental and emotional reactions which need interpretation and explanation. Do you feel safe discussing these with the instructor?

Is there a feeling of inclusiveness, care and connection between the Master(s), instructor(s) and students of the school and among the students themselves? Does the school have a wider focus on service as part of the practice? Are there just to get rich on the desperate unknowing students? Is it too commercial? Does it help the community? What type of qigong system is it?

Generally speaking, qigong be classified in two ways:

1. That which is based on physical postures or movements. 2. That which is primarily based on an energy transmissions for Therapeutic Applications.

The first , which is based on form, can utilize postures, movements, breathing techniques and/or creative visualization. A student's results depend on the accuracy of the posture, how well the Master's or instructor's guidance is followed and the length of time that is devoted to practice. The benefits of practice are directly proportional to the personal commitment that is made.

The second type of qigong is based primarily on a transmission of energy information which is passed through the Master or instructor to the student. This transmission contains the practice system and reinforces the student's connection to the greater Universal energy. The energy information contained therein is then used by the students like a key to unlock their own wisdom and understanding. A good connection to the Master or instructor and an altruistic intention are considered beneficial to practice. Movements and postures are often also used in these systems, but they have a secondary function. Systems based on energy transmissions are more difficult to find than form-based systems, and finding an accomplished Master to teach this type of system is hard also.

What human, spiritual or Universal origin

does the practice have?

Some systems are created by qigong Masters from their own experience; some have ancient Divine origins and were subsequently passed from Master to student; others evolved from a direct Universal energy transmission to the Master. In addition, different spiritual traditions have influenced qigong, such as Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. Remain open-minded to the possibilities.

Like the "qi balance" that you seek through a qigong practice, the process of finding the right qigong practice system should be a balanced one. While it is important to gather information from external sources, always remember to rely equally on your internal senses. For only you can truly know what will work for you.

Traditional Learning: The Six Concepts of Qigong Practice

The
Principles of Qigong Practice are the principles for guiding
practitioners to do Qi gong in a correct way. The principles of the Qigong have only six main concepts.

Zheng

Zheng has two meanings. The first meaning is Zheng Qi--- the mind
has Zheng Qi. Practitioners should know that the purpose of practicing
Qigong is to cultivate the body's Zheng Qi and rejuvenenate your
health. Therefore do not be overanxious for quick results. When time
comes, the success will come.

Second meaning of Zheng is upright. The body should be kept upright. The three points---Bai Hui (GV20), Hui Yin (CV1) and center of Yong Quan (K1)
---should be connected in a straight line. Relax the muscles to avoid
stiffness of the joints, slant the body and lift up the hands. Set down
your shoulders and slightly bend your knees.

Song

Song means relaxing. The mind should be at ease. Smooth out the eye
brows and close the eyes with a smile on the face. The body should be
completely relaxed and naturally limbering up. Relax the whole body: the head, face, neck, shoulders, chest, upper
back, lower back, abdomen, waist, hip, knees and feet. Relax the
muscles of the body, the nervous system, blood vessels, joints and each
internal organ, trying to keep them in a completely relaxed state.

Jing

Jing means tranquility. Keep the mind as steady as an old pine
standing firmly on the rocky cliff. Keep a peaceful and quiet mood, get
rid of distractions of all sorts. Turn a blind eye to what you see and
turn a deaf ear to what you hear so as to enable the brain to enter a
tranquil, visionary and pleasantly Wu state.

Kong

Kong means empty. Being empty means a mental state of complete
emptiness. Everything in the universe seems obscure and invisible.
There is no lust and ambition. You should be oblivious of yourself,
forgetting everything and be perfectly peaceful with broad mind as if
one had come into a tranquil visionary and empty extent.

Bu Pa

Bu Pa means fearless. Pay no attention to noises coming from
surroundings, nor be scared by thoughts or visions occuring in the
course of Qigong practice. Qigong practice can bring feelings hotness
numbness, soreness, swelling, coldness and itching. These feelings will
appear and disappear spontaneously. Do not be anxious of anything.

Bu Li

Bu Li means ignoring. It also means carefree. When you practicing Qigong, you will experience various kinds of Qigong states. Pay no
attention to thoughts, feelings, expectations or sensations arising and
only keep practicing Qigong.

Traditional Learning: The Six Concepts of Qigong Practice

The
Principles of Qi Gong Practice are the principles for guiding
practitioners to do Qigong in a correct way. The principles of the Qigong have only six main concepts.

Zheng

Zheng has two meanings. The first meaning is Zheng Qi--- the mind
has Zheng Qi. Practitioners should know that the purpose of practicing
Qi Gong is to cultivate the body's Zheng Qi and rejuvenenate your

Class is from 7pm-815pm and cost only $10.00 per class. To join email us at qigonghealingcenter@gmail.com to join this group.

What are some of the characteristics of Healing Sounds Qigong?

Healing Sounds Qigong utilize appropriate sound resonations to subtly vibrate our five internal organs ( the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, and kidneys), and the Triple Warmer areas. In so doing, our internal organs can be mildly stimulated and rejuvenated, and thus promoting our health.

Body movements are also used in this Qigong. These movements help open up our “breathing space”. And if we are trained to become aware of the specific finger tips or toe tips, we can then easily open up the related meridian lines. In this way, we can feel an even stronger shifting of the breathing space.

Healing Sounds Qigong is an excellent practice for training the coordination between our body and our breathing. When we are pronouncing a healing sound, we are always exhaling. The ensuing body movement, no matter in what direction, will be done while inhaling. This natural coordination between breathing and body movements, makes the otherwise difficult shifting of breathing space from our fingers through the whole body and legs, down to the toes.

Training the Next Generation of Practitioners

It is exciting to see how many students that come and join our student body of Qigong practitioners and continue to reap the benefits of Qigong Healing Center techniques. Many are amazed of the depth of the practice, alongside the simplicity of the techniques. My only comment really is "Thank You" and develop your art, techniques and teach many people the same practice you are learning. This is really where the exciting aspects of Qigong take place when the techniques get shared and spread throughout the community's.

We currently only have a small number of leaders teaching the practices out in the Southern Michigan and Western areas of Michigan county's but I forsee that Qigong Healing Center practices will grow very quickly within the next two years. So this is awe inspiring to see the people, groups taking shape. My vision is to see the Qigong Healing Center practices to become widesprerad and be presented to the general community and to empower the community's of people to have and run their own community of dedicated practitioners. Qigong Healing Center method is a format for the new generation of practitioners and practice groups that empower each other through proven methods of Qigong.

I close this entry also by saying it is also comforting for me as ateacher that I have been able to cultivate many students in their training by weekly classes, so they can learn the art correct and not "in a fast learn" environment"; this has always been my format since the mid 1990's.

Point of Interest: Just remember when you study with a teacher what is the teachers motivation to teach you:

1. Is it because they want to teach you

2. Is it they just want to market the practices in a mainstream format to make money

G. W. Abersold

If you ever wanted to expierence Qigong in the proper setting this would be the class to take. Class goes beyond introductory levels of understanding and is taught by Gary Abersold.

Don't let the price of $10.00 per class mis-lead you that it might be something not of quality. This is not "Qi-for dollars" or "Dao for Dollars" system. I offer the class to be affordable by anyone of any financial situation, making money is not the driving force here. So if interested in learning Qigong from a Master level teacher here is your opportunity, to get initiated into the "art of Qigong".

Qigong 101

Traditional Chinese medicine holds that disease occurs when there is stagnation of qi, which will be cured when the circulation of qi and blood is improved. Qigong is a therapy effective for treating stagnation of qi and promoting the circulation of qi and blood. Qigong therapy can be divided into two main categories: self-treatment, i.e. the practice of qigong by patients themselves and treatment from others, i.e. receiving the external qi emitted by experienced practitioners.

Practicing qigong in a proper way will make the qi flow smoothly, enhancing the metabolism and the immune function. It helps one overcome disease by tapping the latent power of the body. Although there are various ways to practice qigong, the following three elements should always be included, I.e., regulation of mind, body and respiration; among which regulation of mind is the most important one.

Regulating the mind into a state of tranquillity is the most fundamental skill in qigong practice. Tranquillity is a state, in which one who is practicing qigong concentrates all his or her thought on the exercise with the mind empty of all distractions. Perception of external stimuli including sound and light is greatly reduced and gravity sensation of limbs and joints are lost. Expressed in modern medical terms, it is an inhibition state of the cerebral cortex. The inhibitory action restores to normal the disordered cerebrocortical function due to over excitation and suppresses the pathologic focus of excitation, creating favorable conditions for recovery of the health. The effect of qigong on neurasthenia, hypertension and peptic ulcer is probably related to the inhibitory protection, as these diseases are all due to nervous tension and disorders.

Regulation of the body, particularly the posture, is also important. Generally, qigong is practiced in a sitting, standing or lying form. In the sitting or lying form of practice, the oxygen content of the body is about 30% lower than before practice, and the metabolic rate is 20% lower than before the practice. The oxygen consumption and metabolic rate may be even lower than during a sound sleep. At the same time, the respiratory rate and minute ventilation are also reduced correspondingly.

That is to say, during the practice of qigong the metabolism is lowered which is beneficial for reducing consumption of vital energy, allowing it to re-accumulate. That is why qigong is effective for some chronic diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis and can strengthen the health in those with weak constitutions.

Respiration is a skill in qigong practice. The basic respiration is deep abdominal respiration. In some qigong exercises the abdomen is naturally extended during exhalation and retracts during inhalation, while in other qigong exercises the abdomen bulges during inhalation and retracts during exhalation. The respiration in either way promotes gastrointestinal peristalsis and improves digestion and absorption. Therefore, many people have an increased appetite and gain weight after qigong practice. Qigong has good results in the treatment of gastroptosis, chronic gastritis and chronic colitis. Qigong comprises both motion and stillness. Stillness keeps the body and higher nervous centers in a inhibitory state so that they have adequate rest to restore the normal function of the central nervous system. Motion excites the autonomic nervous system including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. During practice,

Qi should be descended to Dantian, or in other words, thought should be concentrated on the lower abdomen. This forms a focus of excitation in the nervous system of the lower abdomen, promoting the secretory function of the visceral a organs in the lower abdomen. The deep and prolonged respiration strengthens the movements of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles, augmenting the portal circulation and also promoting the systemic and pulmonary circulation's. The practice of qigong increases the vital capacity, trains the heart and improves the metabolism. All these may be attributed to the therapeutic mechanism of qigong.

Therapeutic approaches with External Qi

A sick individual has weak electromagnetism and is sensitive to the external qi emitted by the qigong practitioner, which stimulates the patient' s ability to fight disease and restore health. The curative action of external qi can be explained in the following three respects:

External qi has a certain inhibitory or killing effect on bacteria in vitro.
External qi can enhance the immune function of the body, i.e. the body resistance.
External qi emitted by the qigong practitionerr consists of far infrared ray, near infrared ray, electromagnetic wave, microwave and infrasonic wave, which form a bioelectric field, serving as the basis of the external qi therapy.

The human being has an instinct of re-patterning itself. It has been proven now that Meridian bioelectricity has been found. In every part of the body there is bioelectricity of varying potential. If a lesion occurs in any part of the body, there is imbalance of the functions as well as imbalance of the bioelectricity, or in terms of traditional Chinese medicine, there is an imbalance between blood and qi. The external qi emitted by a qigong practitioner is also a kind of bioelectricity which regulates the meridian bioelectricity of the patient to restore the normal balance of bodily functions and balance and rid the diseases.

It should be noted that, although qigong has a curative effect, it is not a cure-all. It has its own indications and-contraindications, no matter whether one does exercises oneself or whether one is treated with external qi. There is no reason to reject medication and other therapeutic measures. In a word, the best way to restore health is a selection of different effective therapies for patients according to different constitutions, conditions and symptoms.

Millions of people are practicing qigong more than ever, even programs like Oprah I trying to promote andd captalize on it; because it is generally recognized that qigong is an ideal measure for promoting health.

Why is qigong taken as an ideal measure for strengthening the health? In antiquity there were no hospitals or medical doctors. How could the ancient people protect themselves from disease?

According to the archaeologists and historians' research and inference, at that time people paid attention to doing exercise, protecting themselves from the cold and disease by jumping, dancing, and meditative sitting, from which measures for maintaining the health, including qigong, were developed.

Practicing qigong does not need any particular condition or equipment. There is no limitation of sex, age or constitution. Qigong can be performed in any season and in all weather, indoors or outdoors. During practice, one can stand, sit, walk or lie down. Therefore, everybody can do it.

Qigong promotes the physical and intellectual development of children. It can develop their potentialities and facilitate the development of the brain and visceral organs. For adolescents, qigong regulates and balances their physiological reactions and impulsive adolescent psychology. It also promotes their learning ability. For adults, qigong can remove fatigue and raise working efficiency. It is worth noting that qigong has a very good effect on the fetus. When a couple practice qigong, they strengthen their body functions and mental condition, which helps the baby. For the aged, the effect of qigong is even more marked. Qigong can make the best use of the stored nutrients, better than taking tonics such as ginseng and pilose antler, and is effective for prolonging life. In a word, everyone can practice qigong bind benefit from it. Therefore, it is advisable for everyone to learn qigong.

Three "Biggy" Key Elements of Qigong

Qigong is a unique exercise for strengthening the health. Through conscious regulation of respiration and movements it relaxes the body and mind, and regulates the circulation of qi and blood, improves the metabolism and develops the potentialities of the body. Generally speaking, qigong is composed of three key elements, i.e., relaxation and tranquilization, direction of qi by the will and movement of the body. These three elements can be summarized as regulating the breath, the mind and the body.

1. Relaxation and Peace: While practicing qigong, the mind should be calmed. Peacefullness of the mind refers to eliminating nervousness and relaxing the whole body and mind in a quiescent, comfortable and peaceful state. Only when the mind and body are relaxed, can the nervous excitation be reduced and the antagonism between the extensors and flexors weakened, resulting in decrease of the pressure on the vascular wall and dilation of the blood vessels that facilitates the circulation of qi and blood. So, relaxation and peacefullness are the prerequisites for directing the flow of qi by the will. There are quite a few methods of relaxation and peacefullness. One of the common methods is respiration-counting, i.e., to concentrate the thought inward by counting one' s own respiration so that all the distractions from the outside will be eliminated and the tranquil state will soon ensue. Inward-looking is a method to calm the mind by closing the eyes and looking inward. Will -concentration is to induce peacefullness by directing the will on a certain part of the body and concentrating the thought on a spot.

2. Direction of qi by the will: This is the most fundamental exercise in qigong. First of all, the will or the flow of thought should be concentrated on a certain part of the body, such as Dantian or Yongquan (in the center of the sole of the foot). Only the concentrated will can promote the flow of qi. As soon as the body is relaxed and the relaxed is calmed, the will or the flow of thought should be concentrated. If peacefullness is immediately followed by concentration, a corresponding focus of excitation is produced in the cerebral cortex to protect against the attack of pathogenic factors. The more important thing is that through concentration of the will and direction of the flow of qi by the will a state of outer stillness and inner motion is formed, which promotes the self-regulation and self-control of the body and develops the potentialities of the body. This is the most important element of qigong exercise.

3. Movement of the body: This refers to adjustment of the posture during practice. Movement of the limbs can promote the flow of qi in the meridians and collateral's, helping the direction of the flow of qi by will. The principle of body movement is to adjust the body to the most comfortable posture, including the head, neck, waist, limbs, fingers and visceral organs. Body movement can be integrated with the thinking in images, causing further concentration of thought. During body movement, it is important to keep the respiration natural and smooth with fine, deep, even and soft inhalation and exhalation.

                                      Three Guidelines

Being relaxed, calm and natural are the three requirements for qigong

Being relaxed: The whole body from the top to the toes should be relaxed without any tension from the very beginning of practicing qigong. The relaxation is so extensive that the body, joints, thinking, emotion, mental state and visceral organs should all be relaxed. Generally speaking, at the beginning it is not easy to achieve such a state of relaxation, but gradually complete relaxation is possible.

Being calm: When practicing qigong the environment should also be quiet. Only when the emotions are calm will the brain become tranquil.

Being natural: This refers to the posture, respiration, emotion and environment. All these should be natural. Points for Attention in Qigong Practice. Although there are various kinds of qigong, care must be taken about the following points no matter which kind of qigong is practiced:

Qigong should be practiced sincerely. One must firmly believe that qigong is able to mobilize the internal energy and has the effect of preventing and treating disease and promoting the health. So, before the practice it is advisable to learn the theory and method of qigong as much as possible, and to be familiar with all the main points. Persistent practice leads to good results.

All intense activities (either physical or mental) should be stopped 20 minutes before practice so as to relax the muscles all over the body and calm the mind. One must have ease of mind during practice. If there is anything unhappy, one must try to comfort oneself and to set the mind at rest. If the vexation cannot be removed, it is better to go outside to calm down and start the practice only after the emotions are calm.

It is desirable to have a secluded place with trees, flowers and fresh air for practicing qigong, for example, a park, a forest or the edge of a lake. However, a quiet bedroom is also an ideal place. It should be noted that prevention from direct exposure to sunshine in summer and exposure to cold wind in winter is essential.

The bladder and bowel should be emptied before practice. The clothes should be loosened to facilitate muscle relaxation, smooth breathing and circulation of qi and blood. If a lying position is adopted, it is better to take off the outer clothing.

Practice can be scheduled according to the practitioners constitution, work or condition of illness. If qigong is practiced for therapeutic purposes, it may be performed 4- times a day, 1 hour each time, once before getting up and then after going to bed, and once or twice each in the morning and in the afternoon. If it is practiced for strengthening the health, once in the morning and in the evening for 1.5-2 hour is enough. Practice can be continued in the menstrual period, but too much effort should be avoided, and the mind should be concentrated on the epigastrium but not on the lower abdomen. However, for those with prolonged and excessive menstruation, the practice should be suspended.

For beginners It Is usually difficult to be calm. if this occurs, there is nothing to worry about. One should not be upset or give up the practice. Peacefullness is an important factor for successful practice of qigong, so it should be mastered.

When one becomes peaceful, some visual or auditory hallucination may occur. In addition, there may be a heavy feeling in the head and shoulders, swaying of the body, twitching of the muscles, hotness in the lower abdomen or throughout the body, or itching on the skin. If so, one should stay calm and not be disturbed by these reactions.

During practice, it Is important to combine the motion with qi and the qi with the will, so that the will, qi and motion can be well integrated. This not only makes the action integral, graceful and comfortable, but also produces the best effect.

When finishing practice, stand or sit up slowly with no aggresive movements. Open the eyes first, and then massage the head and face. Begin to move gradually.

It is better to select different kinds of qigong exercises for persons with different constitutions and different diseases. However, the simplest exercises should be learned first. You can gain alifetime of benefits from Foundations, always take them to a deeper level.

The Nature of Cure and Healing

Generally, when people think of the word “cure,” they take it to imply that a specific condition is treated to the point it no longer exists. In truth this is rarely, if ever, the case. The manifestation of any given symptom indicates by its presence an a prior constitutional weakness that allowed it to be expressed. In other words, the patient had either a genetic and/or karmic predisposition that allowed this symptom to become manifest. The inner tradition focuses on constitutional issues which comprise that aspect of self that can never fundamentally be changed because it comprises one’s inborn nature. Medicine can help compensate for our constitutional weaknesses but cannot ultimately change what has been present from conception. Hence the inner tradition does not focus on achieving a cure as an end point of treatment. Rather, the focus is placed on guiding the patient through the process of healing. A condition is considered to be healed when it no longer limits a patient’s self-expression or hinders quality of life.

Even after substantial improvement, all symptoms, like habits, have a tendency to return. After all, the constitutional basis that allowed them to manifest in the first place is still present, and all people tend to fall back into their old patterns of behavior. When a patient initially comes for treatment, he or she may be suffering from migraine headaches four days a week. The condition may be so debilitating that the patient is virtually unable to function. After a successful course of treatment, the patient may have only one or two migraine headaches a year. The patient whose quality of life is now greatly improved may tell friends that the headaches have been cured. It is clear, however, that the patient still has the same inner disposition that created the headaches in the first place.
Ultimately, symptoms are warning signs of deeper imbalance. Patients must learn to recognize their symptoms in their early stages before they become experience of the virtues associated with one’s constitutional type. Hence a person who is wood constitutionally will be better able to experience the virtue of benevolence as it exists at his or her core. Increased contact with one’s source of virtue corresponds to a restitution of the basis of one’s capacity for intuition.

The mind’s capacity to heal is somewhat slower than the spirit’s. Although profound insight may occur in a moment, the tendency of the mind is to continually fall back into habituated patterns of thought and belief. Only commitment to manifesting innate virtues paired with conscious vigilance can prevent the mind from seizing control and motivating one’s attitudes and actions. Healing of the mind is signaled by an increase of behaviors that reflect one’s constitutional virtues. While the spirit may know virtue, it is the mind that governs the movement of qi and wills actions that are consistent with fulfilling destiny.

Of the three depths, the body takes the longest to heal. Once a functional imbalance has manifested physically, it is relatively more concrete and harder to influence through treatment. Spirit is that which allows us to be in contact with virtue, and mind is that which allows our actions to reflect virtue. After original nature is lost and one is separated from the source of virtue, it takes many years of dysfunctional thought and behavior for illness to become embodied. Although spirit and mind may move toward healing relatively quickly, it will again take years for correct thought and action to be once again embodied as physical health.

The Three Levels: Body, Mind, and Spirit
Using the language of classical Chinese medicine it is impossible to talk of the separation implied by the English words body, mind, and spirit. Hence the character xin refers to the physical, emotional, and spiritual heart. The Chinese language uses one term, xin, that has a multitude of meanings implicit within it. On the other hand, the English language uses three terms, body, mind, and spirit, to address what is implicitly thought to represent a unified whole, namely, the human being. Think of each of the five elements as comprised of spiritual, emotional, and physical realms of being. For example, the spiritual aspect of the wood element corresponds to the hun and its ability to be in contact with jing in a way that informs one of his or her life plan. The mental aspect of wood involves the decision-making faculties of the gallbladder which transmit the potential of that plan into the world. The physical aspects of wood are comprised by the actual organs of the liver and gallbladder, as well as all material aspects of being associated with these officials such as the tendons, ligaments, eyes, and the course of the liver and gallbladder meridians.

The functional basis of disharmony may emanate primarily from the physical, emotional, or the deeper realms of spiritual being. For example, a lack of benevolence and the presence of belligerence indicate dysfunction in the spiritual and emotional realms of the wood element. It is quite possible, however, that at the time of the assessment the patient exhibits no physical symptomatology in the wood element. A patient diagnosed with hepatitis C, a severe physical illness of the liver, however, may be perfectly healthy in the spiritual and emotional domains of liver function. Hence the patient may be tranquilly benevolent and possess healthy self-esteem. Identifying the level of being that perpetuates dysfunction in each patient is a primary task for the practitioner of the inner tradition.

Of the three depths, the spirit possesses the capacity to move most quickly. In just one moment, the spirit may heal in a way that binds one again to true self and one’s life purpose. Healing in this way is signaled by increased

This preceding discussion illustrates an important premise in the inner tradition: Therapeutic measures administered with the intention of promoting healing will be received by the deepest aspects of self that perpetuate dysfunction. Of course, the focus of constitutional diagnosis is to direct healing toward the deepest aspects of the patient’s being. One’s constitutional dynamics are the basis for all expressions of true self in life. In directing treatment to this depth, the practitioner lays a foundation for subsequent healing by attending primarily to the most essential aspects of being. These principles are also present physiologically. Functional imbalances often begin with excessive physical and/or emotional work and then proceed to qi, blood, yin, yang, and ultimately jing deficiency. Deficiency of jing signifies the physiological depth of an imbalance. If a patient is jing deficient one must tonify this root of the imbalance to promote substantial healing.

If the symptoms of dysfunction are suppressed, illness will be driven deeper into the level of being that perpetuates imbalance and subsequently increase dysfunction in the other levels of being. If an imbalance of spirit is treated in a way that suppresses its expression, then the root of the imbalance will continue to perpetuate dysfunction as the patient becomes increasingly distanced from original nature. Eventually what began as a spirit-level dysfunction may become embodied as physical illness. For example, a patient who has been physically abused and subsequently experiences rage and depression may be given antidepressants as a long-term intervention. These drugs do not address the root cause of the problem, however, that may be located in the spiritual depth of the liver official. In time, the spiritual dysfunction that has been unattended to will undermine the functioning of the mind and body, ultimately leading to physical illness.

In contrast, illness may begin in the physical realm with the invasion of an external wind/cold pathogen. In this case antibiotics may be administered that eliminate the bacterial source of the infection but do nothing to eliminate the wind/cold. Excess heat generated as the body attempts to move the stagnation of cold will, over time, consume fluids. Depletion of fluids, in turn, will predictably lead to the more serious state of lung yin deficiency. By the time the yin of the lungs is injured, the imbalance is likely to have entered the spirit and emotional realms and the patient may evidence grief, longing, and difficulty receiving quality in life. Note that the suppression of symptoms is not limited to the inappropriate use of Western medical interventions. Treatment in any modality that eliminates pain but does not educate the patient has the potential to perpetuate ignorance and drive illness deeper.
